BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE PRESENTATION
Fourteen faithful Latter-day Saint women have served as general Relief Society presidents from its beginnings on March 17, 1842. These presidents each have completely different personalities but whose commonality involved many threads of likeness—faith, service, compassion, obedience, trials, heartaches, endurance. Working through inspiration, the general presidents guided the Relief Society organization from a gathering of twenty women to now the world’s largest women’s organization. Each president was called at a particular time to lend her particular strengths and abilities to Relief Society. The PowerPoint slides of “Elect Ladies: Presidents of the Relief Society” presents a picture of each woman with brief highlights of her life and administration.
During Janet’s 40-minute PowerPoint presentation, ” ‘Elect Ladies’ “: Presidents of the Relief Society,” she highlights a short history of the Relief Society organization as she describes the lives of the fourteen past Relief Society presidents. Each woman, guided by the Spirit, has helped to build the Relief Society from its small beginnings of 20 women in Nauvoo to now not only the world’s largest women’s organization but also truly a worldwide organization. From the time Emma Smith, the first Relief Society president, issued the call to “do something extraordinary,” Relief Society sisters, inspired by the motto, “Charity Never Faileth,” have accomplished extraordinary works of charity—from gleaning wheat, raising silkworms, making Red Cross bandages, to sending quilts to refugees in addition to the countless quiet acts of service in local units. Though each general president has experienced personal trials as well as challenges in administering the Relief Society, each serves as a marvelous example of faith, hope, and charity.
